German Fly Festival 2008
Germany has now
been placed on the list of countries sporting Fly Festivals.
This Festival was situated in an old castle outside Hamburg. The
spot was well chosen – beautiful country surroundings, lush
fields and woodlands and the weather at its best – warm and
sunny. Indeed – what more could you ask for?
The Fly Tyers were situated in
the old riding barn, fenced in by old, thick granite walls, very
picturesque – but in fact it was like sitting in a fridge, very
cold indeed. I had to warm my hands repeatedly on a lamp, in
order to be able to tie flies at all. Due to the low temperature
– Andy couldn’t make his epoxy glue to work. All in all – I must
say that there were only minor complaints to be corrected for
future festivals. Overall the arrangement was a success and I
look forward to participate in the coming one due to take place
in 2010. In spite of the Hamburg Marathon and a football match
taking place the same weekend, the Festival still attracted
about 3000 guests in all.
Apart from the Fly Tyers there
was a Hall with exhibition of most items connected to fly Tying
and fishing. Garments, rods, wheels, flies, baskets, boxes,
paintings, kayaks, travels - all were represented – Personally I
bought my dream rod: a Gary Loomis Stinger…….
Outside were
placed several casting lanes, in a carp pond a small raft was
situated for casting instruction. Mel Krieger, Andy Morray and
Sepp Fuchs were present to grace the Festival.
Below you´ll find
a few pictures taken at the festival. Hopefully it will inspire
you to drop by in 2010. |
